High schoolers finding their way!

Five of Surfpop’s high school students were chosen to join a group embarking on the exciting Wayfinder project. The project included three weekends of overnight hikes across a variety of local nature reserves and a final art exhibition in Tokai Forest. An amazing opportunity for them to access and be inspired by nature, and the first time for them to hike such long distances and camp and sleep in nature; a stark contract with their normal township environment.

According to the creators Lyall Sprong and Faith47: “The Wayfinder project explores inner and outer worlds while moving through wilderness areas on the South Peninsula of Cape Town. As we walk, we draw to create and collect artifacts, which will be used to create a larger art installation. What does it mean to find your way?”

A moment that stood out for many of the group was when they had to each take a turn to cross a bridge in the middle of the night. Each individual had to overcome their fears, walking alone through the mist and darkness; signifying a crossing over towards embodying their braver, more empowered selves.
