Cracking the reading code

In response to South Africa’s literacy crisis—where 8 out of 10 Grade 4 learners can’t read for meaning—we’ve strengthened our after-school program with a powerful new literacy tool: The Early Birds Phonics Program.

Developed by experienced speech-language therapist Elizabeth Nadler-Nir, Early Birds is a free, evidence-based literacy toolkit designed to help struggling young readers (aimed at Grade 2-5 level), especially those facing learning barriers, language disadvantages, or socio-economic challenges. Since November 2024, Surfpop has piloted and shaped the development of this project, offering feedback to make the toolkit practical, cost-effective, and impactful for NGOs like ours.

Our learners engage in fun, structured games and worksheets that focus on phonics, vocabulary, letter formation, and basic comprehension—backed by the Science of Reading. These materials help bridge critical learning gaps and build foundational English literacy, especially for those who need extra support beyond the classroom.
