Working in nature conservation

In the first half of 2025, our high school learners explored careers in nature conservation and ecotourism through three exciting workshops.

First, Mark and his team from Cape Radd in Simon’s Town took the Surfpop learners snorkelling at Windmill Beach. They learned about marine life and conservation, and how ecotourism can help protect our oceans—many experienced snorkelling for the first time!

Next, we visited Cape Point Nature Reserve, where Khanyisa and her team introduced us to careers in the reserve focused on conservation, hospitality and ecotourism. Learners attended a presentation, toured the reserve, and met with a variety of professionals along the way, all working to protect the environment.

Finally, at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Professor Anusha from the Department of Biodiversity and Conservation Biology gave learners a glimpse into university life and careers in the field. Surfpop graduate Liyabona, now studying at UWC, joined the outing. All learners felt truly inspired!
